MUSIC HISTORY COMPOSED IN GERMANY

beyerdynamic M Series Microphones

For decades, M Series microphones have been helping professional sound technicians, musicians and producers create unique recordings and unforgettable concert moments. Painstakingly handmade at the company headquarters in Heilbronn, Germany, microphones such as the M 160, M 88 and M 201 are considered milestones in the history of audio.

The unified design combines tradition and future without altering the tried-and-tested acoustic signature of the microphones. The names of the M Series microphones differ according to the transducer type. the letter "M" is used for dynamic microphones, whereas "MC" represents true condenser microphones. "MM" stands for measurement microphone.

M 88

Dynamic moving coil microphone

The M 88 is a dynamic moving-coil microphone for the highest demands convincing with flexible application options. It can be used for miking vocals or instruments in the studio or on stage.

Its directional properties are close to the theoretically possible values reducing the risk of acoustic feedback to an absolute minimum. Due to the balanced frequency response, the most diverse sound sources are exactly reproduced, and a signal is created that can be processed easily and at will.

DID YOU KNOW THAT?

Phil Collins was probably one of the best-known users of the M 88. Apparently, he grew so fond of the microphone that he personally carried it from stage to stage in his hand luggage.

M 201

Dynamic moving-coil microphone

Whether in the studio or on stage, the precise sound and linear frequency response of the M 201 result in a signal that consistently stands out in the mix and
leaves all post-processing options open. The M 201‘s slim design also makes it easy to position the microphone, giving the users the best possible support in their search for the perfect sound.

Due to its hypercardioid polar pattern and the hum-bucking coil, the M 201 is ideal to successfully avoid noise and feedback. In addition to this, crosstalk is reduced as best as possible. This is another reason why this microphone is a popular companion for drums. The M 201 is appreciated for the use with acoustic guitars because of its clear and detailed sound reproduction. The M 201 can also be used for vocals or speech.

The M 201 is also an excellent microphone for vocal recordings. It was used by Green Day for the vocal recordings of the album “Dookie”, for the recordings of the world hit “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” by the duo Eurythmics and for the vocal recordings of a-ha’s “Take on Me”

M 130

Dynamic Double-Ribbon Microphone

The M 130 is ideal for stereo, room and instrument recordings and brings a popular and special ribbon sound that is characterised by warmth and precision. Depending on positioning and spatial situation, the M 130 can be used for studio recordings of drums, electric guitar amps, piano, acoustic guitars, orchestras, choirs or for all kinds of atmospheric recordings.

As a stereo microphone system, two M 130 can be used to create a Blumlein stereo system for an excellent sounding room recording. M/S recordings can be made together with a hypercardioid or supercardioid microphone such as the M 160 dynamic double-ribbon microphone or the MC 950 true condenser microphone.

DID YOU KNOW THAT?

The pure aluminium ribbon used in the M 130 is approximately 0.003 mm thick. This makes it many times thinner than a human  hair. On top of that, our ribbon-embossing technique is unique and different to the ones used for other ribbon microphones. This ensures optimal vibration behaviour as well as robustness of the ribbon itself.

M 160

Dynamic double-ribbon microphone

The M 160 impresses with its flexible application options. In addition to drum and amp miking, the wide frequency response and fine-detailing sound also comes into effect on acoustic guitars, brass instruments and string instruments.

A special feature of the M 160 is its polar pattern. Due to its hypercardioid polar pattern, which is unusual for ribbon microphones, the M 160 is less susceptible to ambient noise, as it reduces background noise by 25 dB at 110° and also picks up less sound from behind. This makes it ideal primarily for the studio, but also on stage.

Bill Bottrell, producer for Michael Jackson, recorded the guitar track for the world hit “Black or White” himself with a beyerdynamic M 160 double-ribbon microphone.

MC 930

True Condenser Microphone

The MC 930 is a flexible true condenser microphone with switchable -15 dB attenuation and low-cut filter. If you appreciate the clear sound and high impulse fidelity of small-diaphragm condenser microphones, the MC 930 is the right choice for you.

The MC 930 covers a wide range of application scenarios in the studio and on stage due to its compact design and the authentic and detailed sound character, whereby all post-processing options are also open. Whether for acoustic guitar, piano, hihat, overheads, choir, orchestra, voice or solo instruments of any kind, there is almost no sound source where the MC 930 is not convincing.

The MC 930 is also available as a stereo set: During compilation, the frequency responses and sensitivities of the microphones produced are checked. Our experts then put together those microphones that harmonize based on the measurement results. This way, we create a matched pair based on technical data with the expertise of our employees.

MC 950

True Condenser Microphone

The MC 950 is a flexible true condenser microphone with switchable -15 dB attenuation and low-cut filter. If you appreciate a clear sound and high impulse fidelity of small-diaphragm condenser microphones, our MC 950 is the right choice.

Due to its largely linear frequency response with gentle treble boost, the MC 950 microphone is suitable for use with a variety of signal sources such as piano, choir, orchestra or solo instruments of any kind. Due to its supercardioid polar pattern, the MC 950 can be used where sound from the rear is to be reliably attenuated, as it provides the most effective sound suppression at 140° and 220°.

The microphone also delivers excellent results for speech and vocal recordings - we recommend the optionally available WS 101 wind shield for speech and vocal recordings from a short distance as well as for outdoor recordings.

THIS IS HOW... a small disc makes a BIG impact:

Both the MC 930 and the MC 950 share a natural sound character. A disc made of sintered bronze plays a special role in this context. This not only protects the handmade true condenser capsule from external influences, but is also extremely low in sonic discolouration at frequencies of up to 20 kHz.

MM 1

Condenser Measurement Microphone

The MM 1 has been developed for the calibration of studio rooms, PA and ELA systems. In conjunction with a spectrum analyser, the sound pressure levels of loudspeakers can be checked in addition to frequency response measurements. Due to the slim housing with the protruding microphone capsule, the influence on the sound field is very low, so that a pressure build-up at high frequencies is mostly avoided.

The transmission pattern is selected so that an exactly linear frequency response is achieved with diffuse sound input. This makes the calibration of several loudspeakers in the studio particularly easy and fast.

The MM 1 also provides valuable services when investigating sound signals in research, development and industry.

DID YOU KNOW THAT?

As all M Series microphones, the MM 1 is measured carefully at the end of the production process. In addition, we will provide the individual calibration data for 0° and 90° free-field measurement upon request. By the way, the MM 1 is anything but a one-trick pony. It delivers good results as an unconventional alternative for instrument recordings – perfect for spontaneously recording song ideas.
